Many Troubles on Kobe Airport
1970s
Since Itami airport is located in a residential area, the noises are a big issue. Japan government planned to built a new airport off the coast of Kobe. At that time, Kobe city objected to the plan. Then, a new airport (Kansai International Airport) would be built off the coast of Sensyu.
1980s
Kobe city plans to built a new airport off the coast of Kobe.
1990s
Kobe airport is accepted by the government in 1994, but a big earthquake, called the Hanshin Awaji Earthquake, badly damaged Kobe city. Many citizens objected to built a new airport, since they thought recovery from earthquake damage is much more important than a new airport.
The Kobe city assembly is in favor of Kobe airport, except for the communist party. The city assemly neglected Kobe citizens and started an airport construction.
2000s
Kobe Airport "Marine-Air" will be open on February 16th, 2006. Since the airport costs approximately $3,000,000,000, it might be a big burden for Kobe city.
